Legend

For thirty years, Master Aldren had devoted himself to the history of Valdaryn. He had studied its wars, its noble houses, and the countless rulers whose portraits adorned the halls of its oldest estates. Yet something troubled him. Across generations, the faces remained remarkably similar. A lord painted two centuries ago bore an uncanny resemblance to his supposed great-grandson. A countess whose death had been recorded a hundred years earlier appeared again in a portrait bearing another name. At first, Aldren dismissed these curiosities as the vanity of noble families. But as he compared portraits with genealogical records, a troubling pattern emerged. Entire bloodlines appeared to vanish, only to return under different names, their faces unchanged.

His inquiries did not go unnoticed. One evening, returning to his study, Aldren discovered a strange blade embedded in the wooden frame of his window. Its dark metal resembled a bat in flight, one wing extended into a long, wicked blade. Beneath it lay a parchment bearing a simple warning: Some histories are best left unwritten. Aldren recognized the weapon immediately. Veynefang. He had encountered its likeness in old illustrations and forgotten accounts, always associated with the same mysterious figure. The Wing of Midnight. According to the tales, a winged shadow had haunted Valdaryn for centuries, watching from rooftops and descending upon those who ventured where they did not belong. Aldren had always considered such stories little more than superstition. Now, holding the blade in his trembling hands, he was no longer certain.

The warning should have ended his inquiries. Instead, Aldren turned his attention to the legend itself. Accounts separated by hundreds of years described the same dark silhouette, the same distinctive weapon, and the same merciless guardian. The Wing of Midnight appeared as constant throughout Valdaryn's history as the noble families whose secrets he seemed determined to protect. Aldren began to suspect that the city's oldest legends and its carefully preserved genealogies were bound together by a single, terrible truth.

On a moonless night, Aldren left the archives carrying the documents he believed would finally expose the deception. He had barely entered the deserted streets when a dark shape descended from the rooftops. A blade struck the stone wall beside his face, its single outstretched wing trembling from the impact. Before he could flee, a figure emerged from the shadows, clad in dark armor and a hooded mantle. His face was concealed behind a mask, and several identical blades rested at his belt.

"You were warned," the figure said.

Aldren stared at him. "The Wing of Midnight... You cannot be real. The stories are centuries old."

"And yet here I stand."

The scholar's fear gave way to desperate fascination. "Then it is true. The nobles, their portraits, their names... They have never died, have they?"

The masked figure remained silent.

"Are you one of them?" Aldren whispered. "Have you watched this city for centuries?"

A faint, humorless laugh escaped the mask. "You have mistaken the nature of immortality, scholar."

The Wing stepped closer and extended a gloved hand toward the documents. Aldren hesitated, then surrendered them. The masked guardian examined the pages, his gaze lingering upon the faces of ancient nobles. He knew the truth behind those portraits. He knew what manner of beings ruled Valdaryn, and what their blood could preserve. Unlike the scholar, he had entered their service with open eyes. The Court had offered him a bargain, and somewhere beyond the duties imposed upon him lay a promise he still intended to claim.

"Why protect them?" Aldren asked. "If you know what they are, why serve them?"

For a moment, the guardian remained silent. Behind the dark mask, something shifted in his eyes. A fleeting sadness, perhaps regret, crossed his gaze before vanishing beneath the cold resolve of the Wing of Midnight.

"Some justice can only be found in darkness."

He folded the documents beneath his cloak. "You will abandon this investigation. You will speak of these matters to no one."

The Wing stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper.

"Tonight, you were granted a warning. There will not be another."

Before Aldren could answer, the figure vanished into the darkness, leaving only the first blade embedded in the wall. The scholar stood alone beneath the silent rooftops, his life's work taken from him. He now understood that Valdaryn's most enduring legends concealed two very different kinds of immortality.

For centuries, the same shadow had haunted the city. But beneath its mask, countless mortal faces had come and gone, each inheriting the weapons, the secrets, and the terrible duty of keeping the legend alive.

The lords of Valdaryn changed their names to conceal their immortality.

The Wing of Midnight changed its bearer to conceal his mortality.
